Unicoi County Mayor’s Office:  Status of Response to CSX Transportation announcement to CSX to close Erwin Terminal.

Various local and state agencies are gathering information and inventorying resources in anticipation of assisting CSX employees who have lost their jobs as result of the CSX decisions.

I have been in contact with multiple agencies and individuals who may be involved in addressing the needs of the displaced CSX workers and their families.

Over the next week and beyond there will be more announcements and meetings with key stakeholders in our communities’ response.  These meetings will provide a clearer understanding of the various agencies roles and responsibilities and will help coordinate services.

The lead agency in response to mass layoffs and closing of industry in East Tennessee is the Alliance for Business and Training through State of Tennessee Workforce Development.  They are in the process now of setting up a career center in Erwin in partnership with the ETSU Community Outreach Center.

CSX employees, their families, and our citizens can be assured that our local, state, and federal government elected officials are doing all they can to help Unicoi County and our Region during this unfortunate event.

Although things seem to be moving slowly, I can assure you that “behind the scene” a lot of work and preparation is taking place and you will see the results in the coming week.

Our first priority is to see that the process to help the unemployed workers of CSX is in place and services to them and their families are provided.
